Seven Emfuleni municipal employees arrested over alleged electricity reconnection scheme

Updated Aug. 24, 2026, 9:10 a.m. | By Cliff Shiko & Mmangaliso Khumalo Seven employees of the Emfuleni Local Municipality are expected to appear in the Vanderbijlpark Magistrate’s Court on Monday, facing charges of fraud, theft and tampering with essential infrastructure. The suspects, who are attached to the municipality’s Revenue and Electricity Departments, were arrested by the Gauteng Political Killings Task Team in connection with an alleged illegal electricity reconnection scheme. Five suspects were arrested during a takedown operation in Vanderbijlpark on Friday, and two additional suspects were arrested on Sunday, bringing the total to seven.
